Paris is one of the most captivating cities of the world. It would be hard to exhaust its diversity in a lifetime of visits. Each area looks different, feels different, and has its own style. Traditional and modern at the same time, Paris has always something different to offer.
You can move easily, even on foot, from the calm, almost small-town atmosphere of Montmartre and parts of the Latin Quarter to the busy commercial centres of the Bourse and Opéra or to the aristocratic mansions of the Marais. Having streets full of cafés, bars and restaurants Paris is a big chance to see some street entertainment.
Paris is the most expensive part of France in which to find accommodation. However, compared to other European capitals it's still cheap, and it is perfectly possible to find somewhere decent and centrally placed without spending too much. There are also a number of independent hostels with central locations, where dorm rates are really cheap.
Eating out in Paris doesn't cost as much you might thought. There are numerous fixed price menus, but I suggest that at least for a day you should spend the double getting some gourmet satisfaction. There is a wide range of ethnic restaurants, Chinese, Japanese, Greek and lots more, too.
Paris is a place second to none if you are looking for live music. Nightlife is lively and there are enough clubs to satisfy everybody. A jazz club in St-Germain or Les Halles would be a good choice, but if you want to dance there are many clubs that open around 11pm and some of those stay open until sunrise. For listings of what's on in the city, there are three weekly guides Pariscope, L'Officiel des Spectacles and 7 Jours à Paris which all come out on Wednesdays.
Paris is full of must-see sights. First of all you should go to the Eiffel Tower, possibly in the late afternoon if you want to go up avoiding the long queues. Paris looks fantastic from there. If you want to see some street entertainment, colourful moving sculptures and fountains then visit Pompidou Centre. Buy a museum card and visit some of the museums Paris has to offer and especially the Louvre where you will also find the Louvre pyramid, a wonder of modern architecture. Other must-see sights are the skyscrapers at La Défense, the Tour Montparnasse, the space age Parc de la Villette complex, the Musée d'Orsay, the Bastille opera house, and the new National Library. However, you should know that pleasures of Paris are to be found in its street life and along the lively banks of the River Seine.
