Satellite Technology Revolutionizes TV

Remember the old saying? Hundreds of TV channels but nothing is on! Anyone who thinks that is true hasn't been to the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Convention. Tune in as the industry celebrates 20 years worth of progress in America's entertainment capitol, Las Vegas.

It is amazing that just 6 years after its debut, the mini-dish satellite is still one of the hottest-selling consumer electronic products. Ten-thousand dishes a day are activated every day in American households! The cost of these dishes has dropped so dramatically, home entertainment has never been more affordable, watchable or convenient. No wonder more than 14 million subscribers use direct to home programming.

Statistics show that out of 100 million American TV households, 1 out of 8 uses satellite dishes. Viewers know they can also utilize this space-age technology for countless other uses such as tuning into the Internet. Hundreds of channels are on...and there is plenty to watch.

Within the coming months, the industry's two major providers, DIRECTV and Echostar will offer consumers high speed two-way Internet access via satellite. After a long battle, Congress has just passed new laws allowing local channels to be broadcast over satellite for the first time.

Reaching farther than ever before, satellite TV is a nationwide system that covers both rural areas and the 25 million city dwellers who live in apartment buildings.

As more satellites are launched into orbit, the sky is the limit. Satellite technology, once reserved for the military, is transforming the domestic landscape in so many different ways. The way we work, live and are entertained is changing faster than a speeding satellite signal.
