Astro Lounge, Hours, Supernatural, The Fragile

by James Russell

The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails
The Fragile Lyrically, The Fragile revisits much of the same ideas of betrayal and darkness as The Downward Spiral. Hushed one minute and explosive the next, spite and anger intermix with heartbreaking resignation, sometimes in the course of one song. An album accessible and undeniably entertaining, even when he eschews vocals altogether. The Fragile's songs are simple explorations of deep disillusionment. This album is terrifying and beautiful at the same time, two CDs with scattershot intensity.

     Hours... by David Bowie
Hours David Bowie updates his musical wardrobe, but for the first time in his career he drops the facade. Singing in the voice of an aging man looking back not in anger, but with regret and repentance. This album perfectly suits the season of its release. He boldly intertwines trip-hop rhythms, new-wave nods, slow, deliberate ambient tempos, and atmospheric accents, all while maintaining a cohesive, otherworldly pop appeal. He's taken the millennium as an occasion for self-examination. Bowie's "Hours..." is a great album.

     Supernatural by Santana
Supernatural Without been absent from the music scene, Latin rock forefather Carlos Santana has been away from the studio for the last seven years. Now he's back with two albums in one. First, there is a fine collection of Santana and then there is the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars. The first is an excellent return to form, with enough rock rips and Latin overtones bring Mr. Santana right up to date. The second seems like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic.

     Astro Lounge by Smash Mouth
Astro Lounge California-brand rock tempered with occasional cosmic sound effects. It's been a long time since a band with this much commercial potential could say something provocative, but this doesn't mean that this album is good enough. It's a bit unfair to blame them for the demise of creativity on the radio today, but they are doing the same thing. Smash Mouth rehashes more of the stuff found on its 1997 release, Fush Yu Mang. After sitting through just a couple of songs, it's likely that you'll have had enough of them.
