Audi TT Roadster can hardly fail to make its effect. Roadworthy four-cylinder in-line engines with a displacement of 1.8 liters, five valves per cylinder and a powerful air-intake boost from the turbocharger give the TT Roadster ample power when required. Unlike some of its competitors, the TT Roadster has made the transition from its first public appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995 to series production without undergoing any major changes. With the recent progress concerning the relationship between comfort and driving safety, potential roadster owners now see no reason why they should suffer for their choice of car. What remains is what they have always wanted: a direct line of sight to the sky, the unfiltered aroma of the countryside, the sound of the wind at speed and striking design.

Only one hand is needed to release the firm fabric soft top with its flexible panels and lower it down behind the two seats - the effort required is genuinely low. The manual procedure takes roughly ten seconds; the power-operated top manages the entire operation reliably in fifteen. The tonneau cover, which is supplied with the car, dovetails smoothly into the waistline and prevents the fabric and mechanism from getting dirty. To ensure its easy operation it is fitted with an ingenious anti-theft locking mechanism, which can only be released after a door has been unlocked.

The first visible signs of the safety of the Audi TT Roadster are the two striking rollover bars that are characteristic of the open-top TT silhouette. The standard equipment specification includes pyrotechnic-action seat belt tensioners in conjunction with belt force limiters, and four airbags. The good airborne noise pattern is even more conclusive evidence of the Audi TT's convincing overall concept. When driving with the soft top raised even at high speeds, wind noise remains low. With the top down, even greater aerodynamic advantages come to the fore. The windbreak's profile perfectly matches the TT Roadster. With its two curves it follows the typical TT silhouette of the rollover bars.

Audi TT RoadsterThe rated outputs of 165 kW (225 bhp) for the top-of-the-range version and 132 kW (180 bhp) for the entry-level version ensure tremendous performance: the 165 kW TT Roadster can reach a top speed of 237 km/h, the front-wheel-drive 132 kW model is good for a maximum of 223 km/h. The latter accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds; with power transmitted to all four wheels and 45 bhp more, the top model performs this task in only 6.7 seconds. Flexibility is equally convincing for both models. The top engine impresses with its particularly fine torque characteristic: 280 Nm all the way from 2200 to 5500 rpm, to provide sporting performance or relaxed progress if a more easy-going driving style is adopted. The 132 kW/180 bhp engine is an almost equally strong contender: between 1950 and 5000 rpm it has a torque of 235 Nm.

The TT Roadster is well-equipped to cope with the demands of the enthusiastic driver. Whether with front-wheel drive or the quattro system, the TT Roadster is compact, with a short wheelbase, wide track and large wheels that fill its wheel arches. It has a low center of gravity, with firm shock absorber and spring ratings that play their part in achieving optimum stability on the move. ABS and Electronic Braking-pressure Distribution (EBD) are also standard equipment. Keep the windows closed, switch on the "concert" radio and allow the 225 Watt output from the BOSE Sound System to flood the TT Roadster's cockpit with music, with perfect reproduction from the four loudspeakers integrated into the doors and additional ones including sub-woofers behind the seats. To ensure an ideal driving position, the TT Roadster driver can vary the position of the three-spoke leather-covered steering wheel axially and vertically. The standard sports seats with amply padded sides provide the firm support needed when rounding corners at brisk speeds. The Audi TT Roadster is fantastic car with all the technical resources needed for a long lasting pleasure.
