Financial Gifts for Special Occasions

by Gregory Grant

Students studying hard for finals will soon be graduating. Brides and grooms will be tying the knot, and young people will be celebrating their entrances into adulthood. All will be honored with gifts. What are the most common?

What's the Best Gift?

In years past, savings bonds were popular gifts for these occasions. Now, many people consider giving stock certificates. Stock is a great gift but stock certificates, as impressive as they look, may not be the best way to go. Stock certificates can get lost or destroyed, and come with responsibilities that, if not carried out, can be costly to the owner of the certificate.

Giving a gift that has the potential of future payoff makes financial sense, and has the added benefit of teaching young people about investing and the stock market as well.
